MATH 8 OBJECTIVES:
To build MATHEMATICAL LITERACY by helping students:
- use Mathematics to solve problems with confidence
- use Mathematics to understand the world better
- communicate and reason mathematically
- appreciate and value Mathematics

MATH 8 CONTENTS (See attached government guidelines for more information)
First week Introduction, review and overview of Math 8

TOPICS GRAPHS – Representing data (bar graphs, line graphs, pictographs,circle graphs
NUMBERS – Perfect Squares, Square Roots, Percents, Rate/Ratio/Proportions, Fractions (multiply / divide), Integers (multiply / divide)
PATTERNS and RELATIONS – Variables, Graphs, Equations
SHAPE and SPACE – Triangles/Pythagorus, 3D objects, tesselations
STATISTICS and PROBABILITY – data presentation, independent events
The order of topics followed in the textbook will vary.

An “I” (In Progress) will be given when failure is a possibility. Students and parents will be informed about an “I” mark before report cards. Students with an “I” must complete requirements (“I” work) to receive a passing grade during the semester.

SUCCESS IN MATH 8
Use a school agenda to keep track of work. Keep an orderly Math notebook.
Hand in work with a title, date and your first and last name. Ask for help.
Look for Math in everyday life (e.g. sports, news, health, games, money …).

MATERIALS TO BRING TO CLASS
Bring a pen, pencil, ruler, lined paper, notebook with dividers, calculator.
Some graph paper will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.
Coloured felts and crayons are useful. Bring your textbook once you have it.
PROTECT YOUR TEXT BOOK. COST TO REPLACE IT IF IT’S LOST = $ _.

Label dividers in your MATH notebook:
1. INTRO, REVIEW + GRAPHS, CHARTS (Ch. 1)
2. NUMBERS – RATIOS, PERCENT, FRACTIONS, INTEGERS (Ch. 2, 4, 6, 8)
3. SHAPES – SQUARE / SQUARE ROOTS, TRIANGLES, 3-D OBJECTS (Ch. 3, 5, 7)
4. LINEAR RELATIONS + LINEAR EQUATIONS (Ch. 9, 10)
5. PROBABILITY (Ch. 11)
6. TESSELATIONS (Ch. 12)

CLASS EXPECTATIONS (School Rules apply)
Prepared & Present– come to class with materials needed to work and participate
Respectful – be courteous and cooperative
On-Task / On Time – participate in learning activities, be ready at the bell
Safe – treat people and class materials with care
When expectations are a problem, you’ll be asked to fill out a “white slip”.
Further consequences for not meeting class expectations include detentions, phoning home and contact with the office.

MISSED ASSIGNMENTS
Students who don’t finish a minimum amount of work in class OR don’t hand in work due will be expected to catch up outside of class by a certain date with Ms. McBride. An “I” (In Progress) will be given when missing work is an ongoing problem. Parents will be contacted when missing work is an ongoing problem.

MISSED TESTS
Parent contact (note, phone call) is needed to give credit for writing a missed test.
